Finding Journal Titles and Abbreviations

Citations often provide only abbreviated journal titles. The following sources provide full titles from abbreviations, ISSNs and/or CODENs.

All That JAS: Journal Abbreviation Sources A list of Web resources that list the full title of journal title abbreviations. Genamics JournalSeek “Genamics JournalSeek is the largest completely categorized database of freely available journal information available on the internet… Journal information includes the description (aims and scope), journal abbreviation, journal homepage link, subject category and ISSN.” BiologyBrowser: Publications/Journal BiologyBrowser is produced by BIOSIS provides resources for life science information. The Publications page presents a categorized list of journals for different areas of life science. Each entry consists of a brief description of the journal and a link to the publisher’s home page for that title. BIOSIS Serial Sources Science Reference QH301 .B378 2008 This resource lists all serials indexed by BIOSIS Previews and all of it derivative publications. Each entry includes the full title, abbreviated title, publication history and frequency, ISSN and CODEN. Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI) Science Reference QD1 .A52 1907-1999 vol. 1-3 This three-volume set provides information about the publications indexed by CAS. Abbreviations are shown in bold type, with the rest of the title in italics. Entries are arranged alphabetically by abbreviated title and include information about publication history and title variations, ISSNs, CODENs, publishers and English translations. CAS DDS Title Search The Chemical Abstracts Service Document Detective Service will search by title keyword, CODEN, or ISSN. The keyword search will retrieve any number of substrings so the searching the abbreviation j am chem soc will retrieve: Journal of the American Chemical Society Journal of the American Leather Chemists Association Journal of the American Oil Chemists' Society Journal of the American Society of Brewing Chemists Core Journals Covered in CAplus This is a non-searchable list of the core journals covered in the CAplus database. It includes the full and abbreviated titles, CODEN, and publication frequency. Journals Indexed in AGRICOLA (JIA) This is a searchable database of information pertaining to the journals indexed in AGRICOLA, the bibliographic database of the National Agricultural Library. List of Journal Titles Covered by INSPEC This is simply an alphabetical list of journal titles indexed in INSPEC. Titles that are fully indexed are designated by an asterisk. No other information, such as abbreviations, ISSN or publication history is provided. List of Journal and Other Serial Sources for INSPEC Science Reference QC1 .I57 2002-03 This is an alphabetical listing of publications indexed in INSPEC, the bibliographic database covering physics, electrical engineering and electronics, computers and control, information technology for business, and manufacturing and production engineering. Entries include journal title and abbreviation, publisher, publication history and frequency, CODEN and ISSN. GeoRef Information Services. Serials List (American Geological Institute) This is a non-searchable alphabetical listing of serials indexed in GeoRef. Abbreviations are not provided, but ISSNs, CODENs and indications of publication history may be available. Abbreviations of Names of Serials (American Mathematical Society) This is an alphabetical list of abbreviations used in Mathematical Reviews. Entries include full title, place of publication and ISSN. Search the Journals Database (MathSciNet) The MathSciNet Journals Database covers all journals indexed by Mathematical Reviews since 1985. It is searchable by journal abbreviation, journal name, partial name or ISSN. Entries include full and abbreviated titles, ISSN, publication history and frequency and a link to the article records indexed in MathSciNet. NCBI Journal Browser (National Center for Biotechnology Information) This is a searchable database of journals indexed in the Entrez search system. Full records provide full and abbreviated titles, publication history, electronic and print ISSNs and other information. Links are also provided to other Entrez databases including PubMed, Nucleotide, Protein, and others.
