Circulation Services
Checking Out Materials
Circulating materials may be checked out at the Timken Science Library circulation desk. Journals and reference books do not circulate. The length of the loan depends on a patron’s classification. See Loan Periods and Fines Information for complete details. Courtesy patrons not affiliated with The College of Wooster may still check-out materials, but there are some conditions that apply.
Borrowing Materials from Other Libraries
Interlibrary Loan requests for books can be made only if the books are NOT available from CONSORT or OhioLINK libraries. To borrow from CONSORT or OhioLINK Libraries, see Borrowing Books. The requested item will be delivered to the Andrews Library Circulation Desk in about three or four business days, and you will be notified by e-mail or campus mail when it has arrived.
Interlibrary Loan requests for journal articles can be made for any journal article NOT found in The College of Wooster Libraries or NOT accessible through The College of Wooster or OhioLINK electronic journals web pages. For complete details see the Interlibrary Loan page. Most requests will arrive within five to 14 business days. You will be notified by e-mail or through the campus mail when the materials arrive. Books can be picked up at the Andrews Circulation Desk. Journal articles will be sent to you via the campus mail.
Returning Materials
Books may be returned to the Timken, Andrews or the Gault circulation desks, although it is recommended that all science materials be returned to the Timken Science Library.
Renewing Items
Materials may be renewed at the Timken, Andrews or the Gault circulation desks. It also is possible to renew College of Wooster, CONSORT & OhioLINK items online.
Recalling Items
Should you need an item that is checked out by another patron, and there is no other CONSORT or OhioLINK copy available, you may "recall" that item once the borrowing person has had it checked out for three weeks. Recalled items must be returned to the owning institution immediately, or they will be subject to fines of $1/day. Recalled items are not eligible for renewal. To initiate this process on an item, please contact Gwen Short (ext. 2275) in Timken 114 or ask for her at the Timken Circulation Desk.
Missing Items
If you think that a Timken Science Library item is missing that is listed as on the shelf in the CONSORT catalog, please check with a member of the science library staff to determine if together you can locate the item. If after this assistance, you are still unable to find the item, please complete the Missing Science Book Report. Completion of this form sets a multiphase search process in motion and allows you to be notified as soon as your desired item is found. Once the item’s catalog record has been changed to reflect its missing status, you will be able to request a copy of the material from if it is available at another CONSORT or OhioLINK library.
Reference Services
Full-time staff and student assistants are available in the Timken Science Library to assist you in using the information resources. Please do not hesitate to ask for help.
The Science Librarian is usually available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to provide assistance in locating appropriate print or electronic resources for research. See Donna Jacobs (ext. 2280) in Timken 204 or ask for her at the Timken Circulation Desk.
If you need more in-depth assistance in the use of the Timken Science Library collection for a specific topic or assignment, you may arrange for a Reference Consultation with the Science Librarian. Complete and send the Science Reference Consultation Request, and the Science Librarian will contact you to arrange an appointment.
The Science Library Associate is usually available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday thru Friday, to answer questions related to circulation, reserves, holds, recalls, tracing missing items and fines. See Gwen Short (ext. 2275) in Timken 114 or ask for her at the Timken Circulation Desk.
After 5 p.m. on weekdays and during the weekends, request information and reference assistance at the Timken Circulation Desk. Science Library Student Coordinators can help you with many of your reference and online search questions.
Instruction Services
First Year Seminar Instruction
The College of Wooster Libraries provide basic library instruction for First Year Seminar classes. Upon request by faculty, librarians design each session to introduce basic library resources and any specialized tools required for the assignment. First Year Seminar faculty should contact Reference and Instruction Librarian Elys Kettling (ext. 2443) for more information or to schedule an instruction session.
Course-Specific Instruction
College of Wooster science faculty who are assigning a research project for students in their classes may wish to schedule a library session designed to help students approach that assignment. Contact Science Librarian Donna Jacobs (ext. 2280) for more information or to schedule a session.
Guide to Library Research in Science
In an increasingly complex information environment, it is important that individuals develop the ability to determine when and what kind of information is needed, and to locate, evaluate, and use it effectively. The Guide to Library Research in Science is designed to meet these needs. In addition, specific course-related tutorials are available on this site.
Reserve Materials
College of Wooster faculty may place library materials on Reserve for a particular science course. To do so, they should either complete the Science Library Reserves Request, or its paper equivalent, which is available at the Timken Science Library Circulation Desk. There are four types of Reserve materials that may be checked out as specified by faculty.

Electronic Reserve Information
In addition to the traditional book and other paper-based reserves, the Timken Science Library offers an electronic reserve program known as ERes. Members of Wooster's science faculty may offer electronic reserve items to their students by contacting Science Library Associate Gwen Short (ext. 2275) in Timken 114 or ask for her at the Timken Circulation Desk. He will assist science faculty members in preparing and processing reserve materials to make them suitable for electronic presentation.
Study Carrels
There are 28 study carrels, which are assigned by lot to senior science majors, in the Timken Science Library. Twenty-six carrels are located on the third floor mezzanines, and two are located on the first floor near the compact shelving. Each of the carrels is equipped with a desk lamp and connection to the campus computer network. The carrels do not have lockable compartments. The library is not responsible for items left in the carrels.
Reference books and periodicals need to be available to all patrons. Please do not leave them in your carrel. All reference books and periodicals left in carrels will be collected and reshelved daily.
All other library materials left in carrels must be checked out. Any books that are left in carrels that are not checked out will be collected and reshelved daily. (You may ask the circulation desk worker not to desensitize books that you wish to leave in your carrel, so that they will set off the security alarm if someone else takes them from the library.)
If you have questions about the carrels, contact Gwen Short (ext. 2275) in Timken 114 or ask for her at the Timken Circulation Desk.
Computer Network
In addition to the many Ethernet ports available to patrons throughout the building, the Timken Science Library offers wireless network services. As one of the ScotZones on campus, the library’s system is part of an authenticated, secure network using Cisco’s most secure network protocols. Wooster’s Office of Information Technology decided to secure the network at this level to offer users full access to all network resources rather than limit access. See the Office of Information Technology’s Wireless page for more information about configuring your computer to access ScotZones.
Emergencies
The safety and well being of the Timken Science Library’s patrons and staff members are the first and highest priority in any emergency situation. The preservation of the library facility and its collections are secondary to the lives of patrons and staff members.
In case of fire, library patrons and staff members should leave quickly through the nearest available exit. Do not use the elevator. Wait in the lobby of Andrews Library for further instructions.
In the case of a medical emergency, tell a library staff member, who will immediately contact the Department of Security for assistance.
