Indexes and Databases

Academic Search Complete (EBSCOhost) (early 1970's-present)
This interdisciplinary database indexes over 8200 scholarly journals, popular magazines, and journals of commentary. More than 4650 of the journals indexed provide the full-text of the articles within the database. An option for limiting to peer-reviewed journals exists to increase the scholarly nature of a search.
Article 1st (FirstSearch) (1990-present)
This searchable, comprehensive, interdisciplinary magazine and journal article references database is useful primarily as a current awareness tool. It indexes over 16,000 journals and magazines by key words of article titles. Communication Disorders students will find this database useful for updating searches done in other databases. The database also allows the user to browse references by journal title and issue.
Communication & Mass Media Complete (EBSCOhost)
This database indexes journals in both Communication Studies and Communication Sciences and Disorders. It includes some full text.
Cumulative Indexes of the Journals of the American Speech and Hearing Association (1936-1961), WOO Reference RC423 .A1 C84
Cumulative Indexes of the Journals of the American Speech and Hearing Association (1962-1972), WOO Reference RC423 .A1 C85
Cumulative Index 3 of the Journals of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, WOO Reference RC423 .A1 C86 1983
Cumulative Index to ASHA Journals (1995-1999), WOO Reference RC423 .A1 C87 2000
All four of these one-volume, print indexes by the American Speech and Hearing Association and the later American Speech-Language-Hearing Association index journal articles published in the association's journals. This is useful for finding practical and theory-based journal articles during the time-periods covered. For later years, more current electronic databases will need to be searched.
DSH Abstracts (1960-1985), WOO Reference RF1 .D45
This once-authoritative print index provides abstracts of journal articles available for speech/language/hearing topics. This stopped publishing, so it is somewhat dated and should be used for historical overview of topics only.
EJC (OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center)
This is a collection of electronic journals our students and faculty have access to through our affiliation with OhioLINK.
ERIC (1966-present)
This is the primary database in the field of education. It is useful for communication disorders research projects because several of the journals and association papers of interest in communication disorders are indexed in this database. Topics that cross into the educational environment are particularly well-treated here. If, however, the topic has a more medical or psychological focus, other databases, such as Medline and PsycInfo may be more suitable.
Medline (1966-present) or PubMed (NIH)
This is the primary database in the field of medicine. It is useful for communication disorders topics that have a medical focus.
PsycINFO (journal articles, 1967-present; chapters of books, 1987-present)
This is the primary, disciplinary database in the field of psychology and related disciplines. If the communication disorders topic has a psychological focus, this database could be of particular interest. Each journal article reference in the database includes an abstract summary of the article. The database covers also articles in related disciplines such as sociology, linguistics, medicine, law, physiology, business, psychiatry, and anthropology.
Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection (EBSCOhost)(1970's-present , with a few titles back to the early 1960's)
This database provides indexing, abstracts, and full text for over 510 scholarly journals concerning topics in emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. Included in the full text offerings are over 490 peer-reviewed journals. A small number of titles in this database (under 10) provide indexing and abstracts only. This database is primarily a subset of the Academic Search Complete database, with the addition of some book titles and a small number of journals exclusive to this database only.
Science Citation Index Expanded (ISI)(1980-present)
Social Sciences Citation Index (ISI) (1980-present)
Social Sciences Citation Index (Print volumes: 1978-1979), WOO Reference Z7161 .S65
Indexes 1,700 journals spanning 50 disciplines. Although searches can be done by subject terms, author, journal title, or author affiliation; communication disorders majors will find this index most useful when trying to find out who has cited a particular work by doing a Cited Reference Search. Reference lists for each work are included.
